kawai hong

Marine Debris technician i

Hometown: Kaimukī, Oʻahu

Current Residence: Kaimukī, Oʻahu

Growing up on Oʻahu, Kawai was always observing the world around him - from climbing the tallest trees to tasting the sand bodysurfing at Maks. He was that annoying “Why?” kid, and his favorite response to “I don’t know” was, “Why not?” That curiosity has fueled his creative mind and adventurous spirit. After getting his Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies and Studio Art from Santa Clara University, he came back to get a Master’s in Environmental Management from UH Mānoa. As a walk-on for the UH Men’s Volleyball team, he learned firsthand the value of showing up, supporting his teammates, and being part of something bigger than himself. PMDP is getting an All-American cheerleader who’s always ready to learn, collaborate, and help others succeed. Some would say he is stoked out the dome for his first PMDP mission. Now, he works in fisheries management for Mālama Maunalua while also sidequesting to the max: selling his pottery and jewelry, slaying Taʻape while fishing and diving, perfecting the ultimate lilikoi crème brûlée, and finding every chance to give back to the people and places shaping a better Hawaiʻi for our keiki and Kānaka ʻŌiwi.
